Traveling the Kootenay

October, 2017/18 updates Starting from Victoria on Vancouver Island via BC Ferry to Vancouver, BC, we head east on hwy 1 towards Nelson BC, in the Kootenays. It is March 1, 2017. This is a picture history of our visits, camp-outs, and wonderful friends we met along the way, and some of the awesome scenery you will see anywhere you travel in British Columbia, Canada. Heading over the final mountain pass to Nelson, in the Kootenay Mountain range, the avalanche snow gate was closing behind us as we crossed over the peak. Semi trucks were parked in the middle of the highway as their drivers readied themselves with snow chains on their tires. There was snow everywhere! Five miles an hour is all we could do. Kootenay Pass (Salmo-Creston Highway/Stagleap Park) -Summit early May. Located deep in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Crowsnest Highway. Also dubbed the Kootenay Skyway. The Kootenay Pass is one of the highest highway-served passes in Canada that is open year-round. In bad snow weather they close the pass down in the afternoons for two to three hours for  avalanche control and clearing of debris. We were the last car to pass the summit when we came through. It was a whiteout condition. I have a friend who has this mounted Elk head in excellent shape for sale. Famous wildlife artist did this. Click on the Elk.
